Canada has steadily grown its position as the largest crude oil supplier to the U.S over the last few years, to an average of more than 3.1 million barrels per day. Saudi Arabia ranks a distant 2nd at slightly over 1 million barrels per day. As the above graphic illustrates, Canadian oil sands (heavy crude) exports to the U.S. have surged in recent years while the U.S. continues to import Canadian light crudes at a steady pace despite eliminating light crude imports such as Nigeria.
